Enjoy the beauty in the area

There is a lot to see and do in the vicinity of the forest houses Drenthe. Below are some tips. In the houses is also all kinds of brochures, a map of the area and a booklet with all kinds of tips to do from the guests who have been. Fun to read and get ideas.

Walking and cycling

The houses are located in one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. The Drents-Friese Wold is very varied with large forests, vast sand plains, heathland and lakes.  From the boshuisjes  you can walk and cycle into the nature reserve. In total there are more than 130 km of walking tours and the possibility of cycling routes is enormous. Nice sites to prepare for are:
State Forestry, natural monuments, Drenthe.nl en with the nodes of the ANWB you can determine your own cycling route.

On the road with the kids

For children there are all kinds of fun activities to do together in the area. For example, go to the experience path at Hoogersmilde, swim in one of the forest pools (including Forest bath Vledder), to a climbing park and the Bosberg lookout tower inapple skewer,the nature gamedo on your smartphone in the Dwingelerveld. There is a large cinema in Assen and you can go bowling in Vledder. Or how about picking fruit at the bush robber? And after a walk in Dwingeloo you can settle down with the children at the Bospub, where there is also a playground for the little ones and delicious pancakes.

Sights

ItWorld Heritage van Drenthe is very special. The collections in the Drents Museum in Assen, the Memorial Center Camp Westerbork, the Colonies of Benevolence, the dolmens and the Hondsrug UNESCO Global Geopark are all irreplaceable.

You can also go to the Shakespeare open air theatre (order your tickets on time), various museums, dolmens and the beautiful green villages in the area such as Diever and Dwingeloo.

On the road with the dog

There are several off-leash areas in the area for dogs, such as the wet nose route at Hoogersmilde and Appelscha and the off-leash area at Diever. You can swim in the splash pond above Canada.

Eating out, good food

There are all kinds of nice and tasty eateries in the various villages around the Drents-Friese Wold. Here is a small selection from what is on offer:

De Bospub in Dwingeloo - a cozy bar/restaurant for after a walk in the forest with a playground for the little ones, a lovely terrace and good dishes.

​

The owners of Villa Blauwhemel opposite the Shakespeare Theater have opened a new restaurant 'Posten' in Frederiksoord where they continue their Nordic cuisine.

​

At Onder de Eiken in Dwingeloo you can sit in the garden in the summer and cozy inside the old farm in the winter. including game on the menu.

​

Herberg Het Volle Leven just between Oude Willem and Appelscha is a vegetarian restaurant with a large garden. A household name in the area: reserve on time.

​

Restaurant De Sluiswachter in Dieversluis is located in a beautiful location on the Drentse Hoofdvaart. Surprise menu from the chef 2-5 courses, high tea on Sunday.
